CREATIVE CROSSROADS: ACNE STUDIOS AND SWEDISH CULTURE

INCEPTION

The Special Swedes

Founded in 1996 in Stockholm, Sweden, Acne Studios began as an advertising agency led by founding members Jonny Johansson, Mats Johansson, Jesper Kouthoofd, and Tomas Skoging. The collective operated at the intersection of fashion and film production, pursuing a range of creative projects in graphic design, furniture, and advertising. Originally known as ACNE, the acronym stood for Associated Computer Nerd Enterprises. The name eventually took on new meaning and changed to Ambition to Create Novel Expressions

The brand took a natural shift toward fashion when creative director Jonny Johansson made 100 pairs of denim jeans for friends and family of the brand as PR gifts. The red-stitched trousers garnered the attention of international media and launch the brand into a new sphere. By 1998, the collective had produced their first ready-to-wear line and began trailblazing the future of Scandinavian fashion. Acne Studios has created a reputation for upholding Swedish roots of simplicity and stoicism while introducing boundary-pushing designs that demand a second look.

PHILOSOPHY

The Face Logo

The cornerstone of every brand is its logo. The symbolic face communicates ethos and attitude as it accompanies the design of the garment or accessory. For Acne Studios, their stoic "face logo" features two simple eyes and a straight mouth. This simple and seemingly emotionless image represents the Scandinavian philosophy Lagom. The word directly translates to "just the right amount," with a core belief of finding balance and harmony throughout life.

DNA

The Brand Codes

This idea of human equilibrium translates directly to Acne Studios' design process as well as the image they chose to represent the brand. Johansson favors functional garments such as technical outerwear and traditional denim; however each piece incorporates an unexpected element that elevates the design such as a trompe l'oeil overlay on a pant leg, a garment tag intentionally attached to a jacket, or hybrid fabric construction that mixes leather, fur, and denim simultaneously. The harmony of simple silhouettes and clever construction coupled with the iconic face logo tells a story of Swedish Lagom.

FLAGSHIP

the Stockholm Syndrome

Acne Studios' existence was born and remains in Stockholm, Sweden despite its international presence and influence. Scandinavian philosophy and principles serve as the foundation for Johansson, but this homegrown ideology expands into their physical brick-and-mortars as well. The brand's flagship store is the historical Kreditbanken bank in Sweden known infamously for 1973 bank robbery. This robbery turned into an intense 6-day hostage situation that resulted in the hostages creating a bond with the criminals. This event created the term "Stockholm Syndrome".

Decades later, the Norrmalmstorg building was supposedly "bad luck" for businesses to occupy; however Acne Studios has proven this untrue with the success of their store. The building has been restored by Spanish design firm Arquitectura-G to resemble the original traditional columns and marble used.

Jonny Johansson continues to push boundaries and use the Scandinavian design keys to unlock new innovations with each season.
