MELITTA BAUMEISTER - STORY BEHIND THE STYLE
"For as far back as I can remember, I had a feeling that clothing can affect our lives and the way we feel. I was always drawn to people that used clothing not only to express their personality but also to help build that identity. This is where my love for fashion took root." — Baumeister, 2025
EARLY CAREER

Melitta Baumeister was 14 years old when she decided that designing clothes was meant for her. Born and raised in Stuttgart, Germany, Melitta trained as a seamstress and later earned her M.F.A. in Fashion Design and Society from the Parsons School of Design. Her Fall/Winter 2014 debut capsule collection, presented by VFiles during NYFW, garnered her massive success due to her ability to craft garments from uncommon materials such as silicone and neoprene. Celebrity tastemakers like Lady Gaga and Rihanna sported her sculptural designs early on, which bolstered Baumeister's career as she went on to be featured in distinguished publications such as Vogue, iD, The New York Times, Numeró, and others.
MELITTA'S MOMENTUM

Following her debut, Baumeister had captivated the industry and needed to quickly adjust to the growing demand for her designs claiming, "After VFiles, Mel Ottenberg said ‘Hey, can you bring your whole collection down to my office? I was so broke from making the collection that I just brought one jacket on the train with me." Despite growing pains, Melitta's namesake brand withstood the test of time, granting her a spot in Vogue's Talents Program in Dubai during 2015. The next year, her work was featured in Cooper Hewitt's Beauty: Design Triennial, representing provocative design around the globe. With momentum from these accolades, Baumeister's partner Michal Plata joined the design team in 2017 after studying car design and landing a role at BMW in 2010 for advanced automotive and context design.
CFDA VOGUE FASHION FUND

In 2023, Melitta Baumeister received critical acclaim and praise by being crowned the 19th winner of the CDFA/ Vogue Fashion Fund. With finalists from Diotima, Zankov, Kim Shui, Who Decides War, and more, Linda Evangelista presented Baumeister with the award and monetary prize of $300,000. Baumeister reflected on the experience, sharing, "It is also incredibly rewarding to be recognized for our hard work and contribution to the industry we are so passionate about." The namesake brand went on to receive expert mentorship to continue breaking boundaries — the Baumeister way.
THE BAUMEISTER WAY

Today, Melitta Baumeister continues to let sculptural design drive her brand towards success each season. Volume and exaggerated proportions remain paramount to her process as she uses the unconventional to allow women and men to shape their own identity. Baumeister has most recently partnered with Nike to design the Vomero sneaker in a campaign called "Run Like No One" encapsulating the "private, sometimes quiet journey toward movement." She has also made her return to a full-format runway show for the Spring/Summer 2025 collection, which featured models such as Paralympian Scout Bassett and Rapper Offset.
