CREATIVE CROSSROADS - VETEMENTS AND EUROPEAN CULTURE
FOUNDERS’ ROOTS
Founded by Georgian brothers Demna Gvasalia and Guram Gvasalia, Vetements emerged from a blend of Post-Soviet reality and European fashion education. Raised in Georgia during a period of political unrest, the brothers brought a perspective shaped by displacement, realism, and underground culture. Demna studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp while Guram attended the London College of Fashion, together merging Eastern European street culture with Western luxury fashion.

THE AESTHETICS
Vetements helped define the Post-Soviet aesthetic in contemporary fashion. Oversized silhouettes, utilitarian outerwear, graphic hoodies, and reconstructed tailoring transformed everyday European streetwear into luxury statements. The brand rejected polished perfection in favor of realism, drawing from workers, nightlife, sportswear, and the visual identity of Eastern European cities. In doing so, Vetements shifted luxury toward authenticity, irony, and cultural familiarity.

POLITICAL COMMENTARY
Vetements consistently used fashion as cultural commentary, referencing anti-fascist imagery, Brexit, nationalism, migration, and broader European political tensions. Demna’s experience growing up during the Georgian Civil War informed much of the brand’s emotional tone, with themes of identity, displacement, and survival embedded throughout its collections. More than a fashion label, Vetements became a reflection of modern European youth culture, politically aware, culturally fragmented, and anti-establishment.
