Founded in 1988 by Martin Margiela, Maison Margiela was a key figure of luxury fashion in the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century. He pioneered the anti-fashion movement, which questioned beauty and traditional fashion styles and has had a lasting impact today, with many designers using him as a source of inspiration. Nonconformity remains at the helm of the brand as the house combines British punk heritage with Belgian construction and a tad bit of kink to create unique clothing pieces. As of 2025, Glenn Martens serves as the creative director, continuing Margiela’s legacy with a contemporary, deconstructed edge.
